Dual Disorders Program (Adult)

The statistics show this type of treatment is needed in Western New York:

• An estimated 26 percent of Americans ages 18 and older - about one in four (or over 57.7 million) adults - suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

• According to some surveys, up to 59% of those with a mental health disorder have a history of alcohol or substance abuse.

While there is disagreement over which of these came first, the main issue is that both chemical dependency and mental health issues cause significant problems and treatment is necessary to help develop a healthy lifestyle. Most of the time one of the two issues is ignored. When issues are left untreated, this leads to continued problems and unsuccessful attempts at recovery.

Mid Erie can help

Mid-Erie Counseling and Treatment Services has a program designed to help adults deal with their use of alcohol and other drugs, as well as their mental health symptoms. This program is designed as an integrated model, as there is proven success in treating both the chemical dependency and mental health issues in this manner. One of the advantages of this program is that an individual involved in this program has one primary counselor who will be working on these issues. All individuals who are involved with the Chemical Dependency Program are screened for a mental health disorder.

What is involved in the program?

Mid-Erie Counseling and Treatment Services uses a combination of individual, group, and medication management services to help deal with these symptoms.

This treatment involves several evidence-based practices. These techniques includes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Wellness Self Management (WSM), and Seeking Safety (an intervention dealing with PTSD and addiction).

The group sessions average 8-10 individuals, which allows for a safer environment for group members to share. These sessions look at how their chemical dependency and mental health symptoms interact and proper methods to deal with both issues at the same time.
