Adolescent Chemical Dependency

The statistics of adolescent chemical dependency use are frightening:

• 1 in 5 teens has abused a prescription medication.
• 41 percent of teens think itis safer to abuse a prescription drug than it is to use illegal drugs.
• 26 percent of adolescents have used marijuana in the last year.
• 11 percent of adolescents have used inhalants in the last year.

The reasons why adolescents have used alcohol and drugs include feeling that this is the only way they can have fun, feeling this is the only way to deal with the pressures of school, to feel better about themselves, and to help them feel better about themselves.

Mid-Erie Can Help

Mid-Erie Counseling and Treatment Services has a program designed to help adolescents deal with their use of alcohol and other drugs. This program is designed for individuals from the age of 12 to 18. All individuals who are involved in this program are involved in their own programming and are not engaged in groups with adults. This is because we realize adolescents have their own issues and the program is designed to help adolescents deal with these issues.

What is involved in the program?

The adolescent who is involved in the program comes in for an assessment, meeting with their primary counselor. This assessment is usually done over a period of two sessions and involves meeting with the parent or guardian of the adolescent.

Once the assessment is completed, the counselor, the adolescent, and other involved family members discuss the treatment methods that will be used. This will involve some combination of individual sessions, family sessions, and group sessions. The schedule will be developed with the primary counselor in order to make sure that this will work for all involved. Group sessions are scheduled for after 5 PM in order to accommodate school and work schedules.

Mid-Erie Counseling and Treatment Services utilizes evidence-based practices in order to best help those involved in services. These practices include Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
